Safest Countries in the World 2011

The Safest countries

What are the safest countries in the world to live? In most western countries the matter of security is still high on the political agenda. Where one party feels society is getting more dangerous, the other party claims the streets are only getting safer. The Global Peace index provides a perspective on how safe your country really is, and also which countries are the safest countries in the world.

Global peace index Report

Every year several agencies conduct a survey focussing on the matter of security world wide and establishes lists with the safest countries world wide. The Global peace index is by far the most important one. It bases it findings on 23 factors. It does not only take wars and armed conflict into consideration, but also, and probably more important for the safer countries in the world, also things like violent crimes, murders, percentage of prisoners, chance of terrorist attacks and society's perception of safety. In other words, all factors that contribute to being a safe country. The GPI survey is conducted in cooperation with the Economist Intelligengence unit, the Institute for Security and Peace, and several experts in the field of international security.

This year for the third time in a row it became apparent that the world has become more dangerous in comparsion to the previous year. Also in Europe it is the second time in a row that it has become less safe. Nonetheless, it is still the safest region in the world. Region number two is North-America. In Europe especially the Scandinavian countries are doing very well with 4 countries in the top 10 of safest countries in Europe. Iceland has made the most progress after the instability of 2008/2009, and is now back to being the safest country in the world, thereby taking the thrown from New-Zealand. Japan is still doing very well despite of the nuclear drama this year. They remain high because they have shown that they were very well prepared in coping with the disaster. Furthermore, Japan hardly has any violent crimes and is politcally very stable. It is also one of the safest countries in the world because it hardly has any military expenditure(due to the agreement they made after their defeat in 1945). The United States can be found at place 82 in 2011, demonstrating that it is Canada's safety that makes the North-America score high as a region.
