Swedish Cinema ranks among the most relevant film industries of Europe. Swedish Movies are competing with the very best European Movies. Even outside Europe they are rather popular. Lately of course also for the bigger public with Stieg Larson's Millenium Trilogy. When Daniel Craig is starring in the remake of your movie than you know you are on the right track.

Looking back a little more in time it remains clear that Ingmar Bergman put Swedish Movies on the map. He for many years symbolized Swedish Cinema. There are now however new Swedish Directors that are doing very well.

Let us have a look at the 5 Greatest Swedish Movies. It is a matter of opinion. I am recognizing that there were more candidates. The list is also limited to from up 1980.

1. Fanny and Alexander – Fanny Och Alexander (1982)

At the beginning of the twentieth century, three children spend their childhood in a Swedish Town. When the father dies the mother moves in with another man. The children have to cope with the loss of their father well getting used to the step dad.

This Swedish Movie by legendary Director Ingmar bergman got an impressive Four Oscars. One being the best Foreign Language film, and another the oscar for Best Director.

A twelve-year old boy, living in stockholm, meets a vampire girl.

One of the most well-known Swedish films of recent years. It is not building on the current hollywood vampire hype. It is a movie of its own kind.

After a fight Erik gets expelled from his school and has to go to a private school. Their he torments the authority of the older pupils.

This film was the Swedish film being send in for the Acadamy Awards taking place in 2003, and it was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign-language film.

Two young girls get to know eachother, but more so get to know themselves, from the moment they meet. Despite that it are two completely different girls, a special kind of friendship takes form.

This Swedish movie impressively depicts how it is to grow up in small-town sweden. The film is one of the most often mentioned Swedish ‘arthouse’ films.

Ingmar and his younger brother live with their mom until it is determined that their mother is ill and does not have very long to live. They will stay with relatives, so that the mother can rest a little. Ingmar manages to keep impressively positive.

With 2 Oscar nominations this film is really one to put on your ‘need to watch list’. In my opinion a real Swedish Classic. One of the all-time classics of European Cinema
